The Story
Early on August 7, 2014, I checked into the hospital for surgery; it would be the first of five. I walked in with two boobs and a tumor and left flat-chested and cancer-free. A month earlier, I had joined the ranks of the one in eight American women diagnosed with breast cancer yearly and of the six previous fighters in my own family.
I am fortunate to be among the more than 3.5 million survivors in the U.S. We are all around you and we are anyone. I am a pink statistic and so much more.
The life lived in becoming that statistic was a topless flurry of ever-changing body parts, hormones and hot flashes, tattoos and drugs, the legal kind, and intimate moments with strangers. Although that sounds like the makings of a bad movie drama, it was often comical and business as usual for a pink warrior.
Step into my world and find out how to answer the question, “Did you survive?” Learn the danger of the night-sweat dance, my affiliation with baby orangutans, and a secret love affair – with my couch. Come on, I know you’re curious, what have you got to lose? I can think of a couple of things, which is why you need this book.
With an increasing family history, I knew by my mid-twenties there was a great likelihood that I would face breast cancer. When diagnosed in my forties, I decided to share my experiences through a blog. That blog has become this book where you will find the diary entries along with additional commentary and stories that have not previously been shared.
These pages will envelop you in the reality of what breast cancer treatment and reconstruction truly feel like. With raw honesty, I will expose you to the events that transformed an everyday person into a patient, a warrior, and a survivor with the utterance of four simple words, “You have breast cancer.” There are tales that will make you laugh, make you cry, provide hope and inspiration, and encourage you to have a thankful heart in the face of any circumstance. Every scar tells a story, and this is mine. The story of the person behind the disease just trying to make it through.
