The Story

"Have you heard of the Invisible Legion? No? In this case, the ones who are in the right are not those who dismiss it disdainfully, who wave off the Invisible Legion just like Santa Claus or the witches of Walpurgis Night. They are wrong to wave it off, because the Invisible Legion indeed truly existed. It is the only ghost story of our time about which files, reports, and even photographs were made..." British nobleman Sir Yolland is looking to secure an African oil field after being rebuffed by the French Foreign Legion's leadership, and asks his men to build him his own private army. Unfortunately, as such things go, its officers soon include an exiled Marshal who was the president of Honduras for five whole minutes, a beershipman without his ship and half a jazz band, and the company's meticulously planned equipment now features sun glasses, patent leather hand bags and everything from tennis racquets to safety pins. Soon, however, the situation turns serious as the men turn out to be every so slightly less equipped for crossing the Sahara desert than they made out to be. A humourous adventure novel about the not-quite-military outfit and the shady figures surrounding it, with Rejtő's trademark slightly absurd and quite humourous depiction of chancers, swindlers, larger-than-life brawlers but also of noble quests and friendships, against the backdrop of 1930s North Africa and the unforgiving desert. The first English translation of the 1939 novel 'A láthatatlan légió' by the Hungarian journalist, author and undisputed master of pulp adventure novels. The Invisible Legion is one of his most popular novels, adapted into graphic novels as well as to the theatre stage. About the author: Jenő Rejtő, a Hungarian author born in 1905, gained fame for his humorous adventure novels. Writing as P. Howard, he crafted witty, satirical stories set in exotic locales. His works blend comedy and thrilling narratives, often featuring lovable rogues. Despite his short life, ending in a labor camp in 1943 after being exposed as a Jew to the ruling Nazi Arrow Cross party, Rejtő's influence on Hungarian literature persists. His books are still widely read for their clever wordplay and memorable characters.
