The Story
Mishe-Mokwa and the Legend of Sleeping Bear is a story based on an old Indian folktale, which has been handed down by word of mouth for hundreds of years. It is the poignant story of the mother bear, Mishe-Mokwa, and her tow cubs who swim Lake Michigan for safety after a raging fire destroys their forest haven in Wisconsin. Together the author and illustrator, Nancy Behnken, have conveyed with imaginative simplicity the living legend of how the Sleeping Bear Dunes and the Manitou Islands came to be named. Beautiful pencil drawings throughout.
