The Story

During his lifetime Henry Ward Ranger was considered the dean of American landscape painting. He was the father of the Tonalist movement and founder of the School of Lyme. Unfortunately, the contribution made by this extraordinary and influential artist is not widely known and thus generally underappreciated. What biographical information has been available could, until recently, be found only in widely scattered sources. Estelle Riback's monograph now comprises the most complete and authoritative study of Ranger's life and art. Her painstaking research documents his legacy and places it in its proper artistic and critical contexts. It will become an essential resource for collectors, students, and museum visitors interested in the artist and the period.
