The Story

Formalin explores how misguided government policies can devastate a nation, unravelling the fabric of human and animal life and replacing it with endless chains of tragedy and disaster. The novel tells the story of a zoologist dedicated to animal conservation in his homeland of Sudan, a country ravaged by a harrowing war. Trapped in a war zone near and around his laboratory area, he faces relentless shooting, bombing, sniping, and starvation. One by one, he loses his companions and the animals he worked so hard to protect, burying them all as the chaos around him escalates. Eventually, with no food left and sensing his own death approaching, he resolves to ensure his body is preserved. With no one to bury him, he chooses to submerge himself in a makeshift grave of formalin liquid contained in an oval shower basin to honour his body and prevent it from decomposing into unrecognizable remains. Formalin weaves together elements inspired by real events with imaginative storytelling, offering a profound commentary on resilience, loss, and the cost of conflict.
