The Story
The aim of this anthology is to explore how 37 ballet and classically-trained dancers, both retired and active, have dealt with the ageing process and their career transitions. I conducted these interviews over a period of time, roughly between 2007 and 2017. The dancers revealed how their self-perceptions evolved in response to the constraints or changes that ageing imposed upon them, and how they met those challenges along the way.A recurrent theme was how they had survived and continued to thrive in a culture, and an art form, that puts such a premium on youth and beauty. There are those who worked diligently to keep their optimism and faith when confronted with the challenges of ageing, seeking new ways to negotiate their bodies. Others turned their focus outwards, seeking to foster attitudes of persistence and discipline in their students. In a few cases, the dancers sought new careers. Many, in interviews, expressed an interest in“setting the record straight” about things that happened in their careers, perhaps revealing a preoccupation with the past. Many gave credit for their success, in large part, to the unfailing support of their families and loved ones whose sacrifices allowed them to achieve their goals. Several were the first in their families to pursue a dance career. Despite a myriad of disappointments and frustrations, many said they would always think of themselves primarily as dancers. Some no longer did.
