The Story
About An Essay on Man
“Hope springs eternal in the human breast;
Man never Is, but always To be blest.”
An Essay on Man is a poem published by Alexander Pope in 1733–1734, dedicated to Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke. It represents Pope’s attempt to rationalize or rather "vindicate the ways of God to man", a variation of John Milton's claim in the opening lines of Paradise Lost, that he will "justify the ways of God to men”. More than any other work, it popularized optimistic philosophy throughout England and the rest of Europe.
The poem consists of four epistles. The first epistle explores relations between humans and the universe; the second discusses humans as individuals; the third addresses the relationship between the individual and society; and the fourth questions the potential of the individual for happiness.
